I have worked extensively with Reindeer Graphics, Inc. in the publication of two software packages for quantitative image analysis and measurement: Fovea Pro, a professional quality package that allows sophisticated image analysis on 8 and 16 bit per channel images and The Image Processing Tool Kit, an educational version of Fovea Pro designed to accompany The Image Processing Handbook. Now in its 5th edition, this popular text- and reference book explains and illustrates a broad variety of techniques for scientific image processing and measurement, and can be ordered from Amazon.
Both Fovea Pro and The Image Processing Tool Kit are suites of plug-ins designed to be used with Adobe Photoshop or compatible programs. These host programs range from inexpensive (Paint Shop Pro and Graphic Converter) to professional (Image Pro Plus), which I have used in the past for workshops taught for Media Cybernetics. The book Introduction to Image Processing and Analysis is a textbook for students interested in learning to program the algorithms used for the processing and measurement of images.
