Fovea Pro 4.0 plug-ins for Intel Macs

The Fovea Pro 4.0 CD contains plug-in files for both Windows and Macintosh computers, but with some limitations.

The Windows plug-ins function with all versions of Photoshop from 7 through CS3 (a.k.a. Photoshop 10), under all Windows operating systems from Win 2K through Vista (although Photoshop itself places specific requirements on the operating system and the hardware, for example CS3 requires Win XP with Service Pack 2 or Vista, and requires a monitor with at least 1024x768 pixels).

The Macintosh plug-ins will run on all versions of Photoshop from 7 through CS3, and under either Mac OS 9 (Classic) or Mac OS X, although again the more recent versions of Photoshop require OS X. However, to run the plug-ins from the CD on an Intel-based Macintosh, it is necessary to run Photoshop itself under Rosetta. This can be done by selecting the Adobe Photoshop CS3.app file, choosing File->Get Info, and clicking the "Open Using Rosetta" check box. When this is done, Photoshop will run in interpreted mode (as will the plug-ins). Because of the speed of the Intel processors and the efficiency of the interpreter, even in this mode Photoshop will run faster than on a PowerPC Mac.

It is possible to bypass the limitation of using the Rosetta interpreter and to replace the plug-ins installed from the CD with a set specially compiled for full compatibility with the Intel processors and with Mac OS X. The plug-ins themselves can be downloaded as a zip file, which is expanded to produce a folder containing the "universal binary" format required. This folder of plug-ins should be used to replace those installed previously from the CD. Then Photoshop should be run in its "native" mode rather than using Rosetta, and the plug-ins will appear and function normally. The "universal binary" versions of the plug-ins are intended only for use with Photoshop CS3 under Mac OS X, and will not function under OS 9 (and are not required and offer no advantages under older versions of Photoshop).

Note that the serial number provided with the original CD is still required by the plug-ins. If was not entered when the original plug-ins were installed, it can be entered using the new ones.

To download the plug-ins, click this link and unzip the contents (the folder containing the individual plug-in files). This is a beta version of the recompiled plug-ins. It has been well tested but there may be some slight variations in behavior as compared to the originals. It is our intention to find and fix any problems or limitations, and to this end we invite user feedback. Please send the following specific information to :

• The date when you downloaded the plugins (this will help us to determine whether you are in fact using the current or latest version).
• The menu item that you are reporting (e.g. IP*Measure Global->Area Fraction).
• As much detail as possible about the specific behavior noted, whether it is repeatable, whether the image was 8 or 16 bits per channel, color or greyscale, or a thresholded binary, etc. (in some cases we may request that you also send the particular image that triggers the problem, to aid in finding the cause).
